General Politics

Thanks, Mr. Will. Only four years too late.

It seems conservative commentator George Will has come an epiphany of sorts.  In his column today Will declares, without a hint of irony, that it if it was socialism McCain/Palin were trying to avoid, they were in the wrong party.

"...while Republicans -- whose prescription drug entitlement is the largest expansion of the welfare state since President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society gave birth to Medicare in 1965; a majority of whom in Congress supported a lavish farm bill at a time of record profits for the less than 2 percent of the American people-cum-corporations who farm -- and their administration were partially nationalizing the banking system, putting Detroit on the dole and looking around to see if some bit of what is smilingly called "the private sector" has

President-Elect’s Radio Address to the Nation

President-Elect Barack Obama addressed the nation this morning, focusing on the economic crisis and help for the middle class.   Listen here. Here's a full transcript: On Tuesday, Americans stood in lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen. It didn’t matter who they were or where they came from; what they looked like or what party they belonged to – they came out and cast their ballot because they believed that in this country, our destiny is not written for us, but by us. We should all take pride in the fact that we once again displayed for the world the power of our democracy, and reaffirmed the great American ideal that this is a nation where anything is possible. This week, I spoke with… Continue reading

President-Elect Obama’s first major appointment: Rahm Emanuel

Yesterday, Rahm Emanuel was offered and accepted the position for White House Chief of Staff. Emanuel was a top aide to former President Clinton and has a lot of White House experience. He has a personal relationship with the Obamas. He has been credited as a brilliant strategic thinker, and many have hailed him as the person who knows how to get things done. Many agree that Emanuel is a pragmatist, knows the art of compromise and is a great non-partisan choice. House Minority leader, Republican, John Boehner considers Emanuel a partisan fighter, stating it was an ironic choice for Obama because he has promised change, and to govern from the center. In Fortune Magazine, Tom Cole of Oklahoma warned republicans of Emanuel's ferocity, calling him dangerous and… Continue reading

Yes We Can!

Yes we can!!! Get to the polls and work it. *sniffle*

Twas the night before the election…

Today was a ridiculously crazy day and I barely had time to think about the looming election tomorrow. I was busy moving into a new desk, getting organized for the week and meeting my new boss. I didn't really even think about the election until the afternoon when I heard about Obama's grandmother's passing. I was so sad to hear that she didn't get to see her grandson become the president of the United States. But now, as I watch Saturday Night Live (and a million political ads), I'm thinking about tomorrow. I'm thinking about my daughter sleeping in the next room. About how her father and I have such big dreams for her. About how this election could change all our lives. I have been feeling like our family is… Continue reading

November 4, 2008

First, sorry Mountain Lover for stepping on your post. You point about Row v. Wade is very important, common sense about reproductive rights hangs in the balance. Vote, dammit! But, it is the night before the election, and since this is my site I figured I would engage in a little self indulgent venting. For no other reason other than I would like to sleep for at least 15 minutes tonight. In fewer than 24 hours, there is a good chance that we will know whether Barack Obama will be our next president. Obama is in the lead, the momentum is clearly his. Common sense dictates that Obama will win and we begin to heal our country after eight years of infection. Sadly, we have not… Continue reading

If nothing else gets you to the polls tomorrow: abortion

Take a moment to look at South Dakota. Tomorrow they will be deciding the fate of the nation. How? They're voting on whether or not to ban abortion. Their sole aim is to get a case before the Supreme Court and overturn Roe v. Wade. John McCain has vowed to have Roe v. Wade overturned, while Barack Obama believes that the decision ultimately rests with a woman. McCain has also stated that he would reduce what "health exceptions" would be allowed under the ban. Think about what that will do to our nation. How would they enforce that? How would they prevent travel to states allowing abortion? How far would enforcement go? A while ago they tried to… Continue reading

Voting problems?

Many people are reporting that in some precincts, poll lines are up to 8 hours long. Now, many people would see this, decide they can't afford take that much time off work or away from their families and leave without voting. This is voter suppression and it is unfair and illegal. We have a right to vote, it's our basic civil right in this country and if we are denied the right to vote, you can bet other rights will be right behind it. If you are in Colorado, and you are voting tomorrow, take a moment to read this website and make sure you are prepared. Print it out and take it with you. Empower yourself and make sure that your vote… Continue reading

Take that, Karl Rove!

John Avlon over at Politico wrote a great centrist article about Rove politics and how it is on its way out the door. The result of Rove's tactics is a Republican Party so far right that those who are fairly moderate (like Obama) are considered socialists (see my discussion on the real socialist candidate for president.) Another direct result is hyper-partisanship so strong nothing gets accomplished in this country without control of the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches. Republicans are concerned that a democratic win over these three branches will turn us into the USSR or China, or Cuba. Some republican pundits warn democrats that Obama will be very centrist and we'll be disappointed while their party simultaneously calls him a socialist. It's beyond logic. In… Continue reading

Meet the Socialist Candidate for President

Meet Brian Moore, the Socialist candidate for president. Brian Moore is a decent guy. He's volunteered for the Peace Corps, volunteered for health organizations in South America, he's adopted a son from Mexico, the list goes on and on. Let's take a look at his stance on some issues:

1) Stop The War in Iraq and Afghanistan and bring the American troops and reconstruction companies home immediately;

2) Implement a national health care system to include comprehensive health, dental and mental health care for all residents, foreign and domestic.

3) Initiate a guaranteed income for all American families, working or not, at a level of $35,000 per year per adult (2008 Cost of Living levels)

4) Nationalize Oil Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Banking and Insurance Industry, Railroad and… Continue reading
